Artist's Statement
While studying the science of wood as a
student in college, I became fascinated with its many properties,
especially the variety of grains, unusual figures, and beautiful
colors. In fine furniture making, my objective is to
transform this natural beauty into objects that provide visual
interest, excitement, and uniqueness. Technically, I enjoy
the challenges of construction and joinery to create a piece that will
last for generations.
About
My Work
My furniture is available on a first-come
first-served basis. Most pieces are one-of-a-kind and may be
impossible to duplicate exactly. Wood species (domestic and
foreign) and veneers are hand selected for their unique grain and color
patterns from limited inventories, again making it difficult to
impossible to replicate previous works.
Project designs are chosen for a variety of reasons. My first
criteria is that the piece must be visually pleasing and meet basic
characteristics of good design. Although appearance is in the
eye of the beholder, gentle symmetry and flowing curves assist in
defining proportions for discriminating owners. My inventory
of books, magazines, sketches, and photos provide inspiration from the
past and present to draw upon.
A second criteria include esthetic designs that lend themselves to
using different combinations of wood, capitalizing on grain and color
contrast and assuring uniqueness, such as walnut and maple
borders. Although more expensive, the availability of foreign
woods such as paduak and cocobolo broaden the selection of visual
contrast. All woods and wood materials I purchase are Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) certified … nationally recognized in more
than 50 countries.
Adding even more excitement and challenge are those designs that
incorporate highly figured veneers, allowing subtle bends and shapes
not normally possible of thick wood, even if you could find
it. Of course, the majority of my work is crafted using
traditional joinery such as dovetails and mortise-tenons
joints.
Lastly, simple but elegant details; a small touch of
inlay; a bottom edge cock bead; an
ebonized leg; a simple carving; a rounded end; even
an accidental “birthmark”; and a simple but beautiful lacquer finish.
